Javier Jimenez

Rockford based artist, Javier Jimenez is our first Artist in Residence. Jimenez will use NGAS’s equipment, space, and resources for one year—culminating to a time-based or experimental solo exhibition in the summer of 2020.

About the artist:

With no formal training in the visual arts, Javier Jimenez helped run a commercial screen printing business at only 19 years old. Three years later Jimenez established his own screen printing business. Since then, his raw talent has developed into a complex and striking visual vocabulary.  Though some of Jimenez's work has hints of Op Art's abstract illusions or Pop Art's graphic commercial quality, it is the subversive and cunning attitude with which he makes his "screen-paintings" that catapults his work into contemporary art. By building upon and exploiting his own past with commercial screen printing, Jimenez speaks to ideas of abstraction, propaganda, and painting through a printmaking medium. Jimenez lives and works in Rockford, Illinois where he is also part of Fatherless, a collaborative print posse between 4 artists from the US & UK, that produce limited edition, entirely hand-screened works of art.

Exhibition ON VIEW: JUNE 6 - AUGUST 21, 2020
OPENING RECEPTION: JUNE 6, 2020 FROM 6 – 9 PM

About the Artist in Residence Program

NGAS’s artist residency hosts one local artist a year. This residency offers a regional rockford area artist who works primarily in static, non-digital mediums to expand their studio practice into mediums focused on motion, animation, digital experimentation, or social practices. Applications are open in June 2020.
